The Inteational Campaign for Human Rights in Iran reports that the four bloggers were transferred to Kerman Prison on Wednesday February 17 to carry out their sentences. The report adds, however, that the four tech experts, who were out on bail awaiting the result of their appeal, have not yet been handed a final verdict.

Narenji, Iran’s top website for technological gadget news, was edited daily by the team of four bloggers and drew a wide range of visitors comprised of Iran’s growing audience of technology enthusiasts. It offered reviews of new phones, summaries of Persian-language apps and downloads, and other information in the technology field.

Last December, the Narenji team was arrested by Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), which alleged that the bloggers were “funded and trained by espionage cells waging a ‘soft war’ against the Islamic Republic regime”.

The company president and owner and editor of Narenji, Aliasghar Honarmand, was sentenced to 11 years; Narenji director Hossein Nozari to seven years; Narenji programmer Ehsan Paknejad to five years; and Abbas Vahedi, the site’s content writer, was sentenced to two and half years in jail for “propaganda against the regime and acting against national security through activities on the Narenji website”.

Seven other people involved in ruing the website have also been sentenced to suspended jail terms.

The website has been offline since the arrests.

Jailed Iranian joualist Issa Saharkhiz, who had stopped eating in protest of his treatment in prison, has reportedly ended his hunger strike.

His lawyer reported on Monday February 15 that his client’s case has been forwarded to branch 28 of the Revolutionary Court.

The following is a contribution from Shirin Ebadi Iranian Nobel Peace Laureate and human rights activist to Evin Memorial Campaign , a campaign launched with the support of Radio Zamaneh to build a monument in words to remember those who suffered in and through this prison, and in reaction to Tehran mayor’s plans to wash away that history by tuing it into a park and recreation centre rather than a national museum celebrating resistance and the struggle for freedom.

At 10 AM, they handed me over to two female prison guards. They took their receipts and left. When the prison guard was about to lock the cell door, she whispered to me: “I apologize, Ms. Ebadi. I have to…”

Shirin_Ebadi_Evin

On June 27, 2000, at around 3 PM, I was dragging myself back to my office after the hearing and defence of two imprisoned clients to attend another meeting at 5. The phone immediately showed that I had 15 messages. I tued on the phone. The first was from a friend from Radio France. She was asking in a distraught voice: “Shirin, what’s going on? Do they want to arrest you?” and the messages that followed had similar content, with friends and family expressing conce about my possible arrest.

My sister called and in a worried tone asked why I had not been answering the phone. I reminded her that I caot take the mobile into the court buildings and I had forgotten to tu it back on after leaving the building. I inquired about the cause of her conce. She said the one o’clock news had reported that two lawyers were arrested today in coection with the “tape fabricators” case. Now I realized why I had so many massages. I reassured my sister that the report was not true.

THE CASE OF ‘TAPE FABRICATORS’
On July 9, 1999, during the simultaneous attack on the Tehran University dorms by police and “rogue” groups supported by certain factions of the govement, a young poet called Ezzat Ebrahimnejad was killed, and I represented his family. A number of others were injured in the incident and they had retained Mohsen Rahami as counsel. I searched high and low to trace the attack back to its perpetrators and initiate proceedings against them.

In the course of my investigations, a young man named Amir Farshad Ebrahimi came to my office and identified himself, with clear documentation, as part of the Basij Militia. He had valuable information regarding the agents of the attack. He explained that for political and personal reasons, he had parted ways with the Basij and was prepared to testify in court. With his consent, I made a tape of his statements at the office and provided one copy to the court and another to my colleague, Mr. Rahami. Since the tape contained important political information, I also provided a third copy to the office of Mostafa Tajzadeh, then the political deputy of the interior ministry, to inform President Mohammad Khatami and the Supreme Council of National Security. Unfortunately, rather than triggering an investigation of the allegations brought up by my witness, I simply became a target of threats and criticism by the ultra-conservative dailies Keyhan, Resalat, Yalsarat al-Hossein and others, and a few days later, Amir Farshad, who was guilty of nothing other than giving honest statements, was arrested for disseminating falsehoods.

The police tried hard to make Amir Farshad take back his statements and say that I had encouraged him to give false statements, but he refused and bravely stood by his words right to the end. He even provided more evidence to back up his statements, but his statements were never heeded.

From the point of view of Keyhan and its editors, this story became known as the “case of the tape fabricators” and they insinuated that I had fabricated this tape to disturb national security and public perception, to topple the regime, etc.

THE ARREST
Three weeks after Amir Farshad’s arrest, the media reported the arrest of two lawyers in coection with the so-called tape fabricators case, and since my family and friends know that I had made the tape, they became very alarmed. After my meeting on that day, at around 6 PM, I received a call from someone identifying themselves as the secretary of the Branch 16 court. I was told that I had to go immediately to court to address the charges filed against me. I said the court was closed at this time. The response was that justice takes no vacation and I had to go. I said I was in a meeting but that I would go there the next day.

Half an hour later, two Revolutionary Guards officers arrived at the office with a warrant for my arrest, which had been issued at 7 PM that day. They accompanied me to the Branch 16 court, where after a few routine questions they ordered my transfer to Evin Prison. I later realized that my colleague, Mr. Rahami, had also been arrested at 10 AM at Tehran University.
I told the court that this reeked of interference from the Ministry of Intelligence. It has issued an order and you have obeyed blindly without even taking a statement from me.

INSIDE EVIN
I was sent to Evin with the officers. It was night. I was handed over to two female prison guards at around 10 PM and they collected their receipt. I knew I was being taken to solitary. When the prison guard was about to close the cell door, she gently whispered: “I apologize, Ms. Ebadi! I have to…”
My cell was a small room with a dirty carpet covering the floor. There was no bed, only a blanket. It was prison after all, and I did not expect any more. Still, I stood staring in shock at the cement walls. Ten minutes later, the same woman opened the door and entered with some bread and cheese. She said quietly: “I know you have not had dier. Sorry, this is all that is left.” I said: “I am not hungry.” And I did not pursue the conversation. I thought she would not speak because she was not allowed to. But I was wrong. She began talking and asked me: “Do you not remember me? I was at the Correction and Rehabilitation Centre. Curse this job that now I have to see you in here.”

My colleagues and I established the Society for the Protection of Children’s Rights in 1994. At the time, I was the director of the organization. One of our programs in which I was personally involved was assisting incarcerated children. We would provide them with education opportunities. We also had a counselling section. We established the Correction and Rehabilitation Library, and for this I would often go to the Correction and Rehabilitation Centre. The staff at the centre were familiar with our work and were often very helpful to us.

After referring to our acquaintance at the Correction and Rehabilitation Centre, the prison guard told me that she had been recently transferred to Evin Prison. As she left, she said she was ashamed to have to lock the door on me.

Up to that point, I had been defiant with the security officers, the Revolutionary Guards and the court clerk, but the teary eyes of the prison guard and her repeated apologies made me so upset that I too cried.

Three days later, I was transferred from that section, which was the quarantine ward, and taken to ward 209. I did not see that guard for years, until I ran into her at a meeting. After 25 years on the job, she had finally opted for retirement and rid herself of that “damned” job, as she had described it.

Iran’s Supreme Leader, speaking on Wednesday February 17, less than 10 days before the election, condemned criticism directed at the Guardian Council and waed against “infiltration of the elections by the enemy” and “attacking the Guardian Council”.

a-khamenei

Ayatollah Khamenei stated that “attacking the Guardian Council and questioning its decisions” is part of the enemy’s plans for the coming elections.

The Guardian Council is responsible for approving candidates to run in the elections. For the current elections, the council has disqualified over 50 percent of parliamentary candidates as well as over 80 percent of Assembly of Experts candidates.

Reformists have said that the disqualifications are akin to a form of fixing the election results since the majority of their candidates have been left out of the race.

After their attempts to lobby the Guardian Council members and Ayatollah Khamenei failed to yield any results, reformists together with the Rohani administration and its supporters have gone on to urge the public not to boycott the elections. President Hassan Rohani has called on voters to vote with great care and make sure the most qualified people get the seats.

Ayatollah Khamenei’s vocal support for the Guardian Council comes after moderate cleric Ayatollah Hashemi Rafsanjani severely condemned the council for its disqualification of Hassan Khomeini, the grandson of the late leader of the Revolution, Ayatollah Khomeini.

The Kerman goveor says the drying out of the Jazmurian Wetlands is posing serious danger to millions of lives.

jazmoorian-600x412

The Mehr News Agency reported on Wednesday February 17 that the dried-out Jazmurian wetlands has become the source of 25 percent of dust particles plaguing various Iranian cities and causing serious health complications for millions of citizens.

The Kerman goveor denounced the govement’s failure to take any effective action to replenish the wetlands.

Earlier this week, Mohammad Reza Bakhtiari, the Kerman Regional Water Director, reported that there are more than 19,000 illegal agricultural wells in Kerman around the Jazmurian Wetlands region that are quickly depleting the province’s water resources.

The Jazmurian wetlands is located in southeaste Iran, south of Mount Shahsavaran between Kerman and Sistan-Baluchestan provinces.

Dust particles have become a serious problem in many Iranian cities in recent years, especially in Sistan-Baluchistan, where many natural lakes and ponds have dried out due to continued drought conditions and the overexploitation of water resources.

Iran’s deputy communications minister says the ministry has entered into agreements worth 110 million toumans so that 11 universities can implement smart filtering for inteet websites and social media networks.

filtering

Ali Asghar Amidian told ISNA on Sunday February 14 that smart filtering of social media has begun to protect “families and Islamic culture”.

He said social media must remain in the framework of “Iranian culture and domestic policies” or else their content will be blocked.

Smart filtering is the term used by Iranian authorities to describe the selective censorship of inteet websites.

The deputy minister added that 11 universities have been engaged in this project to “strengthen smart filtering efforts and guarantee success in online electronic warfare.”

Social networking websites such as Facebook and Twitter are completely blocked for users in Iran, who must employ proxies to access the sites. The govement, however, has been trying to implement the so-called smart filtering strategies to allow limited access to sites which, after all, are also being used by the leaders of the country.

The Inteational Campaign for Human Rights in Iran reported on Sunday February 14 that Golestani started refusing food the previous day.

He has reportedly aounced that if he receives no response to his release application within 10 days, he will stop drinking water as well.

The campaign reports that those charged with insulting sanctities have been allowed to apply for a conditional release for good behaviour after they have served one-third of their sentence, and this is the basis of Golestani’s application.

Golestani, a 35-year-old sporting goods salesman, was arrested by Revolutionary Guards intelligence officers at his store in Babolsar two and a half years ago.

Golestani has a Facebook page titled “A Dog’s Life” on which he posted social and political commentaries.

Upon appeal, he was only found guilty of insulting sanctities and was given a seven-year sentence.

While most candidates began campaigning, in six provinces the number of approved candidates is the same as the quota for provincial representatives going to the assembly; therefore, none of them will need to campaign as their entry into the assembly is certain.

The Guardian Council has disqualified most of the reformist candidates, and yet Ayatollah Hashemi Rafsanjani, the moderate cleric known to belong to the reformist camp, has aounced that he will publish a list of the candidates he is endorsing.

Reformists made several attempts to get more of their candidates approved by the Guardian Council, and despite the intense resistance against their efforts, they have stated that they will not boycott the election.

Two weeks before the elections in Iran, the country staged ceremonies marking the victory of the 1979 Revolution. Speaking at the ceremonies, President Hassan Rohani referred to the elections and said people will not vote “for those who promote conflict and extremism”.

Election2

ISNA reported on Thursday February 11 that Rohani said: “People will vote for those who comply with law and order, and not those who promote conflict and extremism.”

He added that no one should boycott the elections, not even those “who are critical of the regime. All conflicts must be brought to the ballot…the public vote will be the final say.”

Despite Rohani’s rally to participate in the elections, a number of scholars have written to him recommending that the administration cancel the elections in view of the widespread disqualification of candidates.

Rohani’s efforts to revive the candidacy of reformists disqualified by the Guardian Council have been unsuccessful.

The Guardian Council disqualified over 51 percent of the candidates from ruing in the parliamentary elections. This is an unprecedented percentage of disqualifications compared to the last nine elections.

Of the 800 candidates who registered to run for the Assembly of Experts, only 161 were approved.

The two elections will run concurrently on February 26.
